Listen to Sulfate

Initially the solo-project of Peter Ruddell (Wax Chattels), Sulfate quickly expanded into a band — first, with David Harris (Jonathan Bree / Princess Chelsea) on Drums, and now with Hariet Ellis (Na Noise / Dick Move) on bass guitar and vocals. The group released their self-titled album in 2019, marking “a significant first step for Sulfate and definitely demands wider attention beyond the project's DIY roots" (UndertheRadar). With NZ and Australia tours they quickly developing a reputation for "startling, sonorous...crushing yet considered" live performances (AmbientLightBlog). Their second record, 'Godzone', released in September 2021 on Flying Nun Records — fully displays their "intensity through restraint" ethos, with its sights firmly set on New Zealand's social conscience. With waves of distorted bass over funereal tempos, driving krautrock drums with chord changes that seem to last an age, and swirling textures supporting cutting lyrics and commanding delivery — this is band that needs to be experienced live.
